What an incredible party! Thank you Erin Hire and her amazing team of VOLUNTEERS for coordinating a well-planned, FUN, celebration! Also, special kuddos to Gretchen for her pre-planning! It was a HUGE success!
In five minutes, at the end of the day, we brainstormed what we are thankful for:
Ms. Murphy :) All the people in our classroom-gracious and kind. Friends and how kind they are. Group people-research Thankful for technology/energy Everything good HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK: We drew area models for multiplication and many of us learned the standard/traditional algorithm for multi-digit multiplication! We ended the week with problem solving using these multiplication concepts. The quizzes will be coming home Monday. Please feel free to email me if your student is frustrated at home, completing their homework. I am happy to go over any questions with them. The new curriculum we are using, Engage NY, matches the rigor of the Common Core Standards; however, I know it can be difficult to understand without the instruction. The thought and effort the students put in to their Personal Narratives was inspiring. I am constantly amazed (literally my mouth hangs open) during our sharing circle, when the students read their best sentence (or two) from their writing. They should be so proud! This weekend, I will be giving them feedback on the pieces they just completed before we begin another draft. I am excited for them to compare the growth they've made as writers! We have also had high level, "beneath the surface" discussions during our read aloud, "Home of the Brave"! Students have shared brilliant theories they are growing as readers and collecting to support or revise their theories as we read further in the book. In the next few weeks, we will be comparing characters and determining the themes in our books. Today, we enjoyed a visit from our District Science Specialist. We planned, built and revised a prototype for a robotic arm. See the pictures below. We will have a short, but productive week next Monday and Tuesday. Specials next week: Spanish/Library; P.E./Music Reminders:

We did a group activity about the food chain Celebration: October 22nd was Diwali! Diwali is perhaps the most well-known of the Hindu festivals. The word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'. Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas.
